چکیده

The virtues of an effective field theory (EFT) approach to many-body problems are illustrated by deriving the expansion for the energy of an homogeneous , interacting Fermi gas at low density and zero temperature. A renormal-ization scheme based on dimensional regularization with minimal subtraction leads to a more transparent power-counting procedure and diagrammatic expansion than conventional many-body approaches. Coefficients of terms in the expansion with logarithms of the Fermi momentum are determined by the renormalization properties of the EFT that describes few-body scattering. Lessons for an EFT treatment of nuclear matter are discussed.

Trapped and cooled gases of alkali atoms can be manipulated to exhibit a variety of interesting phenomena. For example, dilute gases of fermionic atoms, in 2 hyperfine states, can be cooled to temperatures where they become superfluid. An external field can be applied to tune the scattering length a. When |a| exceeds the interparticle spacing, nonperturbative tools are needed to study the syste...

Heavy-fermion and spin-liquid behavior in a Kondo lattice with magnetic frustration

– We study the competition between the Kondo effect and frustrating exchange interactions in a Kondo-lattice model within a large-N dynamical mean-field theory. We find a T = 0 phase transition between a heavy Fermi-liquid and a spin-liquid for a critical value of the exchange Jc = T 0 K , the single-impurity Kondo temperature. Close to the critical point, the Fermi liquid coherence scale T ⋆ i...

We review recent progress in the theory of neutron matter with particular emphasis on its superfluid properties. Results of quantum Monte Carlo calculations of simple and realistic models of uniform superfluid neutron gas are discussed along with those of neutrons interacting in a potential well chosen to approximate neutron-rich oxygen isotopes. The properties of dilute superfluid Fermi gases ...
